2015 Chehalem INOX Chardonnay
Lovely, long and lush! Full ripeness shows creaminess, a little phenolic punctuation, excellent weight and length. At the same time, there is balance and fine, crystalline accents of wet stones, fleshy peach, honeysuckle, green apple and lemon zest. And why was it we thought we needed barrel to give interest to Chardonnay? (Yes, a rhetorical question!)
The 2015 vintage was slightly different in early growing season timing from 2014, but the final effect was the same, big heat, big crop and big expectations. The acids are down, the alcohols are hovering around 14% and the work we did to minimize overextraction resulted in more elegant wines than a hot vintage deserves. Similar to 2014, the fruit was impeccably clean and devoid of disease. Whites look fully ripe, texturally rich and yet balanced. Four progressively warmer vintages, we will just learn to count higher—more heat, more fruit, more, more!
2017 Chehalem Three Vineyard Pinot Gris
A great example of why we make Pinot Gris! Aromatically it encompasses fresh green pear and ripe white peach. The body has a hefty weight that is balanaced by juicy acid. Both slowly fade bringing forward a soft, sweet finish. A great example of how the components of our Three Vineyards blended together become harmonious.
The 2017 vintage is one of the most well-balanced of the last five years, with excellent quality of flavor and acidity levels, and yields bearing higher than normal in all varieties. Fruitfulness caused some problems early on from large berries on full clusters, which led to a bit of uneven ripening. Early season powdery mildew, due to a wet spring, led to in-field sorting early in the growing season. By harvest, blocks were in pristine condition. Ideal fall temperatures allowed us to pick based on flavor development.
2018 Chehalem Rose of Pinot Noir
Our 2018 Rose is a beautiful salmon color with the vibrancy of pink cotton candy. Aromatically, it moves lightly between aspects of grapefruit, strawberries and rose petals with a hint of fresh basil. The palate continues to build energy with a juicy, mouthwatering acid from beginning to end. Its soft texture fills out the mid-palate and evolves into a sweet fruit finish, that begs for another sip.
2016 Stoller Family Estate Willamette Valley Pinot Noir
Our winemaking team seized the opportunity to explore premier sites in the Willamette Valley with this Pinot Noir, a collection of grapes from boutique vineyards within the region. The vintage provided a bountiful yield with beautiful fruit, tiny clusters and
perfect concentration. Showing concentrated red fruit, baking spice and earth, this wine is opulent yet balanced.
2016 was a warmer than average year for the Willamette Valley, with a perfect deceleration of heat accumulation at the end of an early growing season that allowed a nice pace to harvest. A touch of rain during flowering gave the composition of small clusters with a higher skin to pulp ratio, leading to concentrated flavors and aromas, making 2016 one of the best vintages to date.
