2016 Chehalem Ridgecrest Vineyards SEXT Riesling
This year’s SEXT will be the swan song for our fresh and playful Riesling child, and what an amazing year to finish a wonderful string of mouthwatering, palate-cleansing, spritzy loveliness! The nose pops out of the glass with white fleshy pear, mandarin slices, honeysuckle, gummy peaches and lemon sorbet. The palate follows suit with the same blend of juiciness, acid and fresh sweetness. Like a pear mimosa, if you don’t finish the whole bottle, we will be surprised.
This is the year of Earliest Ever. The winter was warm, budbreak was early and 2016 never looked back—bloom, veraison and harvest, all early records. Harvest began in August and was done before October. Although early, the growing season wasn’t as hot as the prior three, but still the same new warm norm. Fruit is fully ripe but not overripe, moderate alcohols, good enough acids and intense, easily extracted, dense wines from 15% smaller berry sizes and yields. Potentially an excellent-to-classic vintage.
